How To Make Elderberry Syrup

Homemade Elderberry Syrup is simple to make and tastes amazing. Elderberry is the dark purple berry of the European elder tree.These berries and flowers, also called Sambucus Nigra, are packed with immune boosting proprieties. It is often taken as a supplement to treat cold and flu symptoms, but the list of benefits goes beyond that. Here I will share a guide on how to make Elderberry Syrup using dry berries as well as other wonderful ingredients to boost your immune system during cold and flu season. 

 

Every year around October, I gather the ingredients and make this syrup. My family and I rarely experience a bad cold, and when we do it is very short and mild. So by consuming Elderberry Syrup I ensure my family and I stay healthy during these cold months. 

 

Elderberry syrup is easy to make and the ingredients you will most likely have in your pantry. Expect for the elderberries, which once you purchase them dry, they last for a long time. 

 

 

List of Ingredients

  • Dried Elderberries – rich in vitamin C and antioxidants.
  • Cinnamon– anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal properties.
  • Ginger– anti-inflammatory,  
  • Thyme– rich in potassium, vitamin C, E. Helps eliminate mucus. 
  • Cloves– anti -microbial properties 
  • Honey – rich in antioxidants, vitamins and mineral such as zinc, for immunity.

  • Water– the base for the syrup.

 

Supplies

  • medium saucepan 
  • spoon
  • fine mesh strainer 
  • glass bottle or mason jar 

Instructions

1. In a medium saucepan combine the water, the dried elderberries, ginger, thyme, cinnamon sticks and cloves. 

2. Bring it to a boil over high heat, then cover and reduce to simmer .

3.Allow it to simmer for 45 minutes.

4. When the syrup is reduced by half it is done. 

5. Allow it to cool for about 15 minutes, then using the strainer discard the ingredients and pour the syrup in your glass bottle or jar. 

6. Pour in the honey and propolis and stir well.

7. Store it in the refrigerator for up to 3 months. 

How to Take Elderberry Syrup

The recommended dose for adults is 1-2 tablespoons a day.

The recommended dose for children is 1 teaspoon a day.

  • 1 cup of dried elderberries

  • 2 large sticks of cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon of cloves

  • 1 teaspoon of thyme

  • 1 (3″) piece of fresh ginger

  • 1/2 teaspoon of propolis

  • 1 cup of honey

Directions

  • Bring it to a boil over high heat, then cover and reduce to simmer .
  • Allow it to simmer for 45 minutes. (The elderberries need to be cooked a long time.)
