Why Do We Need More Sunshine?

When we excessively  expose our bodies to sunlight without protection, there can be a lot damage such as skin cancer. But avoiding the sun for a prolonged period of time can cause a lot of consequences as well.

The lack of sun can weaken our system, causing various health problems associated with the production of vitamin D through the skin. Vitamin D is very important to maintain  bone health, regulate the immune system, and other body functions.

Symptoms of vitamin D deficiency include:

  • Weak bones – One of the most important roles of vitamin D is to maintain adequate calcium levels in the body. Low levels of vitamin D can weaken our bones resulting in fractures.
  • Cardiovascular disease– studies have shown that vitamin D deficiency increase inflammation and infections, increasing the chances of heart problems.
  • Respiratory problems–  a lack of vitamin D is associated with respiratory problems, such as Asthma.
  • Depression– sadness and symptoms of depression are also associated with low vitamin D.

How to maintain an ideal  level of vitamin D in the body?

Sun bathing daily is the best way to absorb vitamin D. For people with lighter skin color, it is recommended 15 minutes in the morning, and 1 hour in the morning for darker skin.

A balanced diet rich in vitamin D foods is also very beneficial. Real, nutritious foods such as eggs, beef liver, sardines, salmon are high in vitamin D. Although these foods contain vitamin D, you will have to consume very large quantities in order to absorb an  adequate amount the vitamin D. So no skipping that morning sun!
